Character Education

Students at Maine School have been participating in the Character Counts! program for the past four years. Students participate in activities based on the 6 pillars of character, and each month has a new focus for being a person of character.  Click here for more information

Sports

Maine School’s 5th through 8th graders participate in the I-40 Sports League. The league provides intramural sports opportunities for boys and girls in basketball, volleyball, cross country, and soccer. Students compete with other elementary and middle school students
along the I-40 highway.

Kiwanis Club of Williams – Student of the Month Program

Each month, a Maine School student is rewarded by the Williams’ Kiwanis club for being an outstanding citizen. Criteria for the choice of students to be chosen includes good citizenship, helpfulness, volunteerism, and responsibility.

Student Council

Student Council, is a platform through which students learn the basics of student government. We learn how to propose an idea to the group and vote, as well as how to debate an issue. We organize two fundraisers per school year, and use the money for student events, such as the schoolwide Valentine’s Day dance and refreshments, the school talents show and service activities. Student Council also organizes Boxtops for Education for PTO.

Our Elementary Student Council travels to Flagstaff or Phoenix on alternating years, to visit either the AZ State Capitol, or the Flagstaff City Hall, where we learn how council meetings work, and get to sit on the council as if we were real Council members. Last year, we met the Flagstaff City Mayor, Mr. Nabours, and toured the council chambers.
Mrs. Christian and Mrs. Kennedy are the Middle School Student Council Coordinators. They work with the students teaching them about student government. The students take on community events and become actively involved in activities that help others. This year they collected movies for Kid Flicks which supplies movies to children in hospitals.

National Junior Honor Society

NJHS students are selected according to strict standards based on scholarship, community service, leadership, and citizenship. New members are inducted every winter, after the end of the second grading period. Sixth graders who have completed two grading periods at Maine School, and seventh and eighth graders are eligible for this honor. Students complete individual and group service projects and exhibit strong leadership skills in their school and community.

“The National Junior Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in official Honor Society activities. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.”

The Maine School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society will induct its charter members in April 2007.

Odyssey Of The Mind

Odyssey of The Mind is an international education program that provides creative problem solving and competitive opportunities for students: Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics.

Band

Band is offered for 4th through 8th grade. In addition to our normal extra- curricular band class we participate in private lessons and visit other school bands.

Year Book Club

Maine Consolidated School has an active yearbook club made up of students from the middle school and three teachers. This group is responsible for taking photographs of all important events throughout the year. The attend a monthly lunch meeting and during the 3rd quarter spent a number of their Wednesday afternoons putting together the information and photographs they took throughout the year and design the school yearbook. A copy of the school yearbook is supplied to every student of the school free of charge.
